Be wise, my son, ¹  and make my heart glad, so that I may answer ²  anyone who taunts me. ³ 

A rich person ¹  is wise in his own eyes, ²  but a discerning poor person can evaluate him properly. ³ 

Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these days?” ¹  for it is not wise to ask that. ² 

Whoever obeys his ¹  command will not experience harm, and a wise person ²  knows the proper time ³  and procedure.

The words of the wise are heard in quiet, more than the shouting of a ruler is heard ¹  among fools.

A wise person’s good sense protects him, ¹  but a fool’s lack of sense leaves him vulnerable. ² 

The words of a wise person ¹  win him ²  favor, ³  but the words ⁴  of a fool are self-destructive. ⁵ 

Those who think they are wise are as good as dead, ¹  those who think they possess understanding. ² 

Because of this the king got furiously angry ¹  and gave orders to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.

“So now Pharaoh should look ¹  for a wise and discerning man ²  and give him authority ³  over all the land of Egypt.

So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Because God has enabled you to know all this, there is no one as wise and discerning ¹  as you are!
