He said to them, “Are you so foolish? Don’t you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him?

After Jesus ¹  left there, he went to the region of Tyre. ²  When he went into a house, he did not want anyone to know, but ³  he was not able to escape notice.

and his clothes became radiantly white, more so than any launderer in the world could bleach them.

It has often thrown him into fire or water to destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Then, ¹  after he went into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?”

For you will always have the poor with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want. But you will not always have me! ¹ 

In the same way even the chief priests – together with the experts in the law ¹  – were mocking him among themselves: ²  “He saved others, but he cannot save himself!

So ¹  Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the wedding guests ²  fast while the bridegroom ³  is with them, can you? ⁴ 

Now Jesus’ ¹  mother and his brothers ²  came to him, but ³  they could not get near him because of the crowd.

and a woman was there ¹  who had been disabled by a spirit ²  for eighteen years. She ³  was bent over and could not straighten herself up completely. ⁴ 

In the same way therefore not one of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his own possessions. ¹ 

He ¹  was trying to get a look at Jesus, ²  but being a short man he could not see over the crowd. ³ 

For I will give you the words ¹  along with the wisdom ²  that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

Nathanael ¹  replied, ²  “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” ³  Philip replied, ⁴  “Come and see.”

Jesus replied, ¹  “I tell you the solemn truth, ²  unless a person is born from above, ³  he cannot see the kingdom of God.” ⁴ 

John replied, ¹  “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

How can you believe, if you accept praise ¹  from one another and don’t seek the praise ²  that comes from the only God? ³ 

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, ¹  and I will raise him up at the last day.

Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus ¹  began to argue with one another, ²  “How can this man ³  give us his flesh to eat?”

Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, ¹  said, “This is a difficult ²  saying! ³  Who can understand it?” ⁴
