The earth was ruined ¹  in the sight of ²  God; the earth was filled with violence. ³ 

The Israelites said to Moses, “We are bound to die! ¹  We perish, we all perish!

He tears me down ¹  on every side until I perish; ²  he uproots ³  my hope ⁴  like one uproots ⁵  a tree.

“As surely as God lives, ¹  who has denied me justice, ²  the Almighty, who has made my life bitter ³  –

Indeed, ¹  look at your enemies, O Lord! Indeed, ²  look at how your enemies perish! All the evildoers are scattered!

He destroyed their vines and fig trees, and broke the trees throughout their territory.

The one who winks ¹  his ²  eye causes ³  trouble, and the one who speaks foolishness ⁴  will come to ruin.

Her gates will mourn and lament; deprived of her people, she will sit on the ground. ¹ 

Ephraim will be ruined in the day of judgment! ¹  What I am declaring ²  to the tribes of Israel will certainly take place! ³ 

Your schemes will bring shame to your house. Because you destroyed many nations, you will self-destruct. ¹ 

Make room for us in your hearts; ¹  we have wronged no one, we have ruined no one, ²  we have exploited no one. ³ 

I said, “Too bad for me! I am destroyed, ¹  for my lips are contaminated by sin, ²  and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin. ³  My eyes have seen the king, the Lord who commands armies.” ⁴ 

God saw the earth, and indeed ¹  it was ruined, ²  for all living creatures ³  on the earth were sinful. ⁴ 

We have overpowered them; ¹  Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. We have shattered them as far as Nophah, which ²  reaches to Medeba.”

Then Balaam ¹  looked on Amalek and delivered this oracle: ²  “Amalek was the first ³  of the nations, but his end will be that he will perish.”

This sin caused Jeroboam’s dynasty ¹  to come to an end and to be destroyed from the face of the earth.

lest the one who hears it put you to shame and your infamy ¹  will never go away.

Wild dogs will yip in her ruined fortresses, jackals will yelp in the once-splendid palaces. ¹  Her time is almost up, ²  her days will not be prolonged. ³ 

Is this the one who made the world like a desert, who ruined its ¹  cities, and refused to free his prisoners so they could return home?”’ ² 

The fishermen will mourn and lament, all those who cast a fishhook into the river, and those who spread out a net on the water’s surface will grieve. ¹
