“‘If a man beats any person to death, ¹  he must be put to death.

One who beats an animal to death ¹  must make restitution for it, life for life. ² 

He deprives the trusted advisers ¹  of speech ²  and takes away the discernment ³  of elders.

to turn a person from his sin, ¹  and to cover a person’s pride. ² 

He spares a person’s life from corruption, ¹  his very life from crossing over ²  the river.

They die ¹  in their youth, and their life ends among the male cultic prostitutes. ² 

Anxiety ¹  in a person’s heart ²  weighs him down, ³  but an encouraging ⁴  word brings him joy. ⁵ 

A cheerful heart ¹  brings good healing, ²  but a crushed spirit ³  dries up the bones. ⁴ 

A person’s gift ¹  makes room for him, and leads him ²  before important people.

Do not be one who strikes hands in pledge or who puts up security for debts.

As in water the face is reflected as a face, ¹  so a person’s heart ²  reflects the person.

Princes were hung by their hands; elders were mistreated. ¹ 

For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder,

Now what is sought in stewards is that one be found faithful.

I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.
