This is why ¹  the Lord permitted these nations to remain and did not conquer them immediately; ²  he did not hand them over to Joshua.

The Israelites did not remain true ¹  to the Lord their God, who had delivered them from all the enemies who lived around them.

But David said to Abishai, “Don’t kill him! Who can extend his hand against the Lord’s chosen one ¹  and remain guiltless?”

Solomon did evil in the Lord’s sight; ¹  he did not remain loyal to ²  the Lord, like his father David had.

And if a peace-loving person ¹  is there, your peace will remain on him, but if not, it will return to you. ²

Now this phrase “once more” indicates the removal of what is shaken, that is, of created things, so that what is unshaken may remain.
