A man named Ananias, ¹  a devout man according to the law, ²  well spoken of by all the Jews who live there, ³ 

So the chief priests and the most prominent men ¹  of the Jews brought formal charges ²  against Paul to him.

“Regarding all the things I have been accused of by the Jews, King Agrippa, ¹  I consider myself fortunate that I am about to make my defense before you today,

because you are especially ¹  familiar with all the customs and controversial issues ²  of the Jews. Therefore I ask ³  you to listen to me patiently.

But when the Jews objected, ¹  I was forced to appeal to Caesar ²  – not that I had some charge to bring ³  against my own people. ⁴ 

There will be ¹  affliction and distress on everyone ²  who does evil, on the Jew first and also the Greek, ³ 

but ¹  glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, for the Jew first and also the Greek.

For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision something that is outward in the flesh,

What then? Are we better off? Certainly not, for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin,

And the rest of the Jews also joined with him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray with them ¹  by their hypocrisy.

saying, “Where is the one who is born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose ¹  and have come to worship him.”

Above ¹  his head they put the charge against him, ²  which read: ³  “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.”

So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story is told among the Jews to this day. ¹ 

(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, ¹  holding fast to the tradition of the elders.

So ¹  Pilate asked him, “Are you the king ²  of the Jews?” He replied, ³  “You say so.” ⁴ 

So Pilate spoke to them again, ¹  “Then what do you want me to do ²  with the one you call king of the Jews?”

When the centurion ¹  heard ²  about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders ³  to him, asking him to come ⁴  and heal his slave.

So ¹  Pilate asked Jesus, ²  “Are you the king ³  of the Jews?” He replied, “You say so.” ⁴ 

(He ¹  had not consented ²  to their plan and action.) He ³  was from the Judean town ⁴  of Arimathea, and was looking forward to ⁵  the kingdom of God. ⁶ 

Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washing, ¹  each holding twenty or thirty gallons. ²
