and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I assigned Mount Seir, ¹  while Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.

The Lord will certainly have compassion on Jacob; ¹  he will again choose Israel as his special people ²  and restore ³  them to their land. Resident foreigners will join them and unite with the family ⁴  of Jacob.

Just as surely as I have done this, so surely will I never reject the descendants of Jacob. Nor will I ever refuse to choose one of my servant David’s descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Indeed, ¹  I will restore them ²  and show mercy to them.”

“I have shown love to you,” says the Lord, but you say, “How have you shown love to us?” “Esau was Jacob’s brother,” the Lord explains, “yet I chose Jacob

Then God ¹  gave Abraham ²  the covenant ³  of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him when he was eight days old, ⁴  and Isaac became the father of ⁵  Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. ⁶ 

Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for fresh game, ¹  but Rebekah loved ²  Jacob.

Now Jacob cooked some stew, ¹  and when Esau came in from the open fields, he was famished.

Jacob obeyed his father and mother and left for Paddan Aram.

So Jacob moved on ¹  and came to the land of the eastern people. ² 

Jacob asked them, “My brothers, where are you from?” They replied, “We’re from Haran.”

So Rachel ¹  gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob had marital relations with ²  her.

When Jacob saw the look on Laban’s face, he could tell his attitude toward him had changed. ¹ 

So Jacob sent a message for Rachel and Leah ¹  to come to the field ²  where his flocks were. ³ 

In the dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ ‘Here I am!’ I replied.

Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, ¹  but Jacob called it Galeed. ² 

So Jacob went on his way and the angels of God ¹  met him.

Jacob sent messengers on ahead ¹  to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the region ²  of Edom.

God appeared to Jacob again after he returned from Paddan Aram and blessed him.

But Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, ¹  in the land of Canaan. ² 

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, ¹  and mourned for his son many days.
