My eyes grow tired as I wait for your deliverance, ¹  for your reliable promise to be fulfilled. ² 

Like cold water to a weary person, ¹  so is good news from a distant land. ² 

The sluggard plunges ¹  his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. ² 

‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; ¹  we wailed in mourning, ²  yet you did not weep.’

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

They say, ¹  “We speak persuasively; ²  we know how to flatter and boast. ³  Who is our master?” ⁴ 

¹ Why do you insist on being battered? Why do you continue to rebel? ²  Your head has a massive wound, ³  your whole body is weak. ⁴ 

I hate your new moon festivals and assemblies; they are a burden that I am tired of carrying.

In the past he said to them, ¹  “This is where security can be found. Provide security for the one who is exhausted! This is where rest can be found.” ²  But they refused to listen.
