because he taught them like one who had authority, ¹  not like their experts in the law. ² 

Then ¹  an expert in the law ²  came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” ³ 

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

The disciples asked him, ¹  “Why then do the experts in the law ²  say that Elijah must come first?”

In ¹  the same way even the chief priests – together with the experts in the law ²  and elders ³  – were mocking him: ⁴ 

Now ¹  the Pharisees ²  and some of the experts in the law ³  who came from Jerusalem ⁴  gathered around him.

Then ¹  they asked him, ²  “Why do the experts in the law ³  say that Elijah must come first?”

When they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and experts in the law ¹  arguing with them.

The expert in religious law ¹  said, “The one who showed mercy ²  to him.” So ³  Jesus said to him, “Go and do ⁴  the same.”

One of the experts in religious law ¹  answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things you insult ²  us too.”

So ¹  Jesus asked ²  the experts in religious law ³  and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath ⁴  or not?”

But ¹  the Pharisees ²  and the experts in the law ³  were complaining, ⁴  “This man welcomes ⁵  sinners and eats with them.”

But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law ¹  and boast of your relationship to God ² 

In my zeal for God I persecuted the church. According to the righteousness stipulated in the law I was blameless.

And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of ¹  the ungodly and sinners? ² 

These women invited ¹  the people to the sacrifices of their gods; then the people ate and bowed down to their gods. ² 

They even built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.

The high places were not eliminated, yet Asa was wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord throughout his lifetime. ¹ 

He removed the pagan altars ¹  and the high places, smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. ²
