No resident of Zion ¹  will say, “I am ill”; the people who live there will have their sin forgiven.

I first decreed to Zion, ‘Look, here’s what will happen!’ ¹  I sent a herald to Jerusalem. ² 

Shake off the dirt! ¹  Get up, captive ²  Jerusalem! Take off the iron chains around your neck, O captive daughter Zion!

“A protector ¹  comes to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their rebellious deeds,” ²  says the Lord.

Your chosen ¹  cities have become a desert; Zion has become a desert, Jerusalem ²  is a desolate ruin.

Moreover, ¹  the Lord says to the people of Zion, ²  “Your injuries are incurable; your wounds are severe. ³ 

I will avenge ¹  their blood which I had not previously acquitted. It is the Lord who dwells in Zion!

Many nations have now assembled against you. They say, “Jerusalem must be desecrated, ¹  so we can gloat over Zion!” ² 

Shout for joy, Daughter Zion! ¹  Shout out, Israel! Be happy and boast with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem!

“Do not be afraid, people of Zion; ¹  look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt!” ² 

This is what the Lord says about him: ¹  “The virgin daughter Zion ²  despises you, she makes fun of you; Daughter Jerusalem shakes her head after you. ³ 

For a remnant will leave Jerusalem; survivors will come out of Mount Zion. The intense devotion of the sovereign Lord ¹  to his people ²  will accomplish this.

The residents of Jebus said to David, “You cannot invade this place!” But David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).

Then I will ¹  tell about all your praiseworthy acts; ²  in the gates of Daughter Zion ³  I will rejoice because of your deliverance.” ⁴ 

I wish the deliverance ¹  of Israel would come from Zion! When the Lord restores the well-being of his people, ²  may Jacob rejoice, ³  may Israel be happy! ⁴

For the music director; a psalm of David, a song. Praise awaits you, ²  O God, in Zion. Vows made to you are fulfilled.

Remember your people ¹  whom you acquired in ancient times, whom you rescued ²  so they could be your very own nation, ³  as well as Mount Zion, where you dwell!

But it is said of Zion’s residents, ¹  “Each one of these ²  was born in her, and the sovereign One ³  makes her secure.” ⁴ 

You will rise up and have compassion on Zion. ¹  For it is time to have mercy on her, for the appointed time has come.
