Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness ¹  to be tempted by the devil.

Then the devil took him to the holy city, ¹  had him stand ²  on the highest point ³  of the temple,

Then the devil left him, and angels ¹  came and began ministering to his needs.

From that time Jesus began to preach this message: ¹  “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you. Go away from me, you lawbreakers!’ ¹ 

Then Jesus began to criticize openly the cities ¹  in which he had done many of his miracles, because they did not repent.

Then they brought to him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute. Jesus ¹  healed him so that he could speak and see. ² 

Then some of the experts in the law ¹  along with some Pharisees ²  answered him, ³  “Teacher, we want to see a sign ⁴  from you.”

Then the disciples came to him and said, “Do you know that when the Pharisees ¹  heard this saying they were offended?”

They replied, ¹  “Caesar’s.” He said to them, ²  “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” ³ 

Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.”

At that he began to curse, and he swore with an oath, “I do not know the man!” At that moment a rooster crowed. ¹ 

Then he released Barabbas for them. But after he had Jesus flogged, ¹  he handed him over ²  to be crucified. ³ 

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ¹  Then Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, ¹  and at that time ²  they will fast.

Then ¹  if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ ²  or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe him.

Then everyone ¹  will see the Son of Man arriving in the clouds ²  with great power and glory.

But those days are coming, and when the bridegroom is taken from them, ¹  at that time ²  they will fast.”

Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ ¹ 

“But when you see Jerusalem ¹  surrounded ²  by armies, then know that its ³  desolation ⁴  has come near.
