After ¹  they arrived in Capernaum, ²  the collectors of the temple tax ³  came to Peter and said, “Your teacher pays the double drachma tax, doesn’t he?”

So ¹  they answered Jesus, ²  “We don’t know.” ³  Then he said to them, “Neither will I tell you ⁴  by what authority ⁵  I am doing these things.

The ¹  foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’

Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all the disciples said the same thing.

and declared, “This man ¹  said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

The ¹  chief priests took the silver and said, “It is not lawful to put this into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.”

The ¹  governor asked them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas!”

They said, ¹  “John the Baptist, others say Elijah, ²  and still others, one of the prophets.”

They said to him, “Permit one of us to sit at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.”

But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and the inheritance will be ours!’

So ¹  they brought one, and he said to them, “Whose image ²  is this, and whose inscription?” They replied, ³  “Caesar’s.”

Then ¹  they went out and ran from the tomb, for terror and bewilderment had seized them. ²  And they said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

They ¹  answered, ²  “John the Baptist; others say Elijah; ³  and still others that one of the prophets of long ago has risen.” ⁴ 

Now when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire to come down from heaven and consume ¹  them?” ² 

He will come and destroy ¹  those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” ²  When the people ³  heard this, they said, “May this never happen!” ⁴ 

Then ¹  Jesus ²  said to them, “When I sent you out with no money bag, ³  or traveler’s bag, ⁴  or sandals, you didn’t lack ⁵  anything, did you?” They replied, ⁶  “Nothing.”

So ¹  they all said, “Are you the Son of God, ²  then?” He answered ³  them, “You say ⁴  that I am.”

The ¹  women ²  were terribly frightened ³  and bowed ⁴  their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living ⁵  among the dead?

They ¹  said to each other, “Didn’t ²  our hearts ³  burn within us ⁴  while he was speaking with us on the road, while he was explaining ⁵  the scriptures to us?”

So they asked John, ¹  “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, ²  nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
