Jesus ¹  was teaching daily in the temple courts. The chief priests and the experts in the law ²  and the prominent leaders among the people were seeking to assassinate ³  him,

This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is greater than I am, ¹  because he existed before me.’

When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straight ¹  and replied, ²  “Whoever among you is guiltless ³  may be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Jesus ¹  went back across the Jordan River ²  again to the place where John ³  had been baptizing at an earlier time, ⁴  and he stayed there.

So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men who had been crucified ¹  with Jesus, ²  first the one and then the other. ³ 

Nicodemus, the man who had previously come to Jesus ¹  at night, ²  accompanied Joseph, ³  carrying a mixture of myrrh and aloes ⁴  weighing about seventy-five pounds. ⁵ 

The two were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter ¹  and reached the tomb first. ² 

Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, came in, and he saw and believed. ¹ 

and from there to Philippi, ¹  which is a leading city of that district ²  of Macedonia, ³  a Roman colony. ⁴  We stayed in this city for some days.

that ¹  the Christ ²  was to suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, to proclaim light both to our people ³  and to the Gentiles.” ⁴ 

Now in the region around that place ¹  were fields belonging to the chief official ²  of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us hospitably as guests for three days.

But again I ask, didn’t Israel understand? ¹  First Moses says, “I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; with a senseless nation I will provoke you to anger.” ² 

For I passed on to you as of first importance ¹  what I also received – that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures,

So also it is written, “The first man, Adam, became a living person”; ¹  the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

This saying ¹  is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” – and I am the worst of them! ² 

For a tent was prepared, the outer one, ¹  which contained ²  the lampstand, the table, and the presentation of the loaves; this ³  is called the holy place.

The Holy Spirit is making clear that the way into the holy place had not yet appeared as long as the old tabernacle ¹  was standing.

then he says, “Here I am: I have come to do your will.” ¹  He does away with ²  the first to establish the second.

“To ¹  the angel of the church in Smyrna write the following: ²  “This is the solemn pronouncement of ³  the one who is the first and the last, the one who was dead, but ⁴  came to life:

(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were finished.) ¹  This is the first resurrection.
