But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, ¹  encouragement, and consolation.

The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, ¹  but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you,

Two or three prophets should speak and the others should evaluate what is said.

So then, brothers and sisters, ¹  be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid anyone from speaking in tongues. ² 

But as for you, communicate the behavior that goes with ¹  sound teaching.

For he did not put the world to come, ¹  about which we are speaking, ²  under the control of angels.

For if Joshua had given them rest, God ¹  would not have spoken afterward about another day.

God had told him, “Through Isaac descendants will carry on your name,” ¹ 

and to Jesus, the mediator ¹  of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks of something better than Abel’s does. ² 

Speak and act as those who will be judged by a law that gives freedom. ¹ 

Now at that very moment his disciples came back. ¹  They were shocked ²  because he was speaking ³  with a woman. However, no one said, “What do you want?” ⁴  or “Why are you speaking with her?”

I have many things to say and to judge ¹  about you, but the Father ²  who sent me is truthful, ³  and the things I have heard from him I speak to the world.” ⁴ 

But when he, ¹  the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide ²  you into all truth. ³  For he will not speak on his own authority, ⁴  but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you ⁵  what is to come. ⁶ 

Jesus replied, ¹  “I have spoken publicly to the world. I always taught in the synagogues ²  and in the temple courts, ³  where all the Jewish people ⁴  assemble together. I ⁵  have said nothing in secret.

I wish you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be strengthened.

Now, brothers and sisters, ¹  if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I help you unless I speak to you with a revelation or with knowledge or prophecy or teaching?

When the seven thunders spoke, I was preparing to write, but ¹  just then ²  I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders spoke and do not write it down.”

Then they brought to him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute. Jesus ¹  healed him so that he could speak and see. ² 

He ¹  told them many things in parables, ²  saying: “Listen! ³  A sower went out to sow. ⁴
