For the Son of Man will go as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born.”

In those days John the Baptist came into the wilderness ¹  of Judea proclaiming,

I tell you the truth, ¹  it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom and Gomorrah ²  on the day of judgment than for that town!

On that day after Jesus went out of the house, he sat by the lake.

The lord had compassion on that slave and released him, and forgave him the debt.

He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and I will give you whatever is right.’

The same day Sadducees ¹  (who say there is no resurrection) ²  came to him and asked him, ³ 

No one ¹  was able to answer him a word, and from that day on no one dared to question him any longer.

Blessed is that slave whom the master finds at work ¹  when he comes.

But if ¹  that evil slave should say to himself, ²  ‘My master is staying away a long time,’

After ¹  a long time, the master of those slaves came and settled his accounts with them.

and said, “Sir, we remember that while that deceiver was still alive he said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’

But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, ¹  and at that time ²  they will fast.

On that day, when evening came, Jesus ¹  said to his disciples, “Let’s go across to the other side of the lake.” ² 

Now ¹  in those days a decree ²  went out from Caesar ³  Augustus ⁴  to register ⁵  all the empire ⁶  for taxes.

But those days are coming, and when the bridegroom is taken from them, ¹  at that time ²  they will fast.”

Now by chance ¹  a priest was going down that road, but ²  when he saw the injured man ³  he passed by ⁴  on the other side. ⁵ 

Even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night ¹  and finds them alert, ²  blessed are those slaves! ³ 

Blessed is that slave ¹  whom his master finds at work ²  when he returns.

For I tell you, not one of those individuals ¹  who were invited ²  will taste my banquet!’” ³
