“You saw the affliction of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea. ¹ 

“But they – our ancestors ¹  – behaved presumptuously; they rebelled ²  and did not obey your commandments.

Will they not ¹  instruct you and ²  speak to you, and bring forth words ³  from their understanding? ⁴ 

He answered them, ¹  “And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?

he does not need to honor his father.’ ¹  You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition.

Woe to you! You build ¹  the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors ²  killed.

So when Jacob heard that there was grain ¹  in Egypt, he sent our ancestors ²  there ³  the first time.

Our ¹  ancestors ²  were unwilling to obey ³  him, but pushed him aside ⁴  and turned back to Egypt in their hearts,

And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors, ¹ 

And now I stand here on trial ¹  because of my hope in the promise made by God to our ancestors, ² 

When the Lord brings you ¹  into the land of the Canaanites, ²  as he swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it ³  to you,

“‘As for the ones who remain among you, they will rot away because of ¹  their iniquity in the lands of your enemies, and they will also rot away because of their ancestors’ ²  iniquities which are with them.

However, when ¹  they confess their iniquity and their ancestors’ iniquity which they committed by trespassing against me, ²  by which they also walked ³  in hostility against me ⁴ 

how our ancestors went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time, ¹  and the Egyptians treated us and our ancestors badly. ² 

“Not a single person ¹  of this evil generation will see the good land that I promised to give to your ancestors!

Moreover, because he loved ¹  your ancestors, he chose their ²  descendants who followed them and personally brought you out of Egypt with his great power

He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors.

Be strong and brave! You must lead these people in the conquest of this land that I solemnly promised their ancestors I would hand over to them. ¹ 

So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had solemnly promised to their ancestors, ¹  and they conquered ²  it and lived in it.

Joshua left those nations ¹  to test ²  Israel. I wanted to see ³  whether or not the people ⁴  would carefully walk in the path ⁵  marked out by ⁶  the Lord, as their ancestors ⁷  were careful to do.”
