“Woe to you, Chorazin! ¹  Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if ²  the miracles ³  done in you had been done in Tyre ⁴  and Sidon, ⁵  they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

Then he uttered this oracle: “O, who will survive when God does this! ¹ 

The son ¹  of Carmi: Achan, ²  who brought the disaster on Israel when he stole what was devoted to God. ³ 

I myself ¹  have seen the fool ²  taking root, but suddenly I cursed his place of residence. ³ 

that the evil man is spared from the day of his misfortune, that he is delivered ¹  from the day of God’s wrath?

You have made your people experience hard times; ¹  you have made us drink intoxicating wine. ² 

Enemies seek to destroy my life, ¹  but they will descend into the depths of the earth. ² 

(May those who hate the Lord ¹  cower in fear ²  before him! May they be permanently humiliated!) ³ 

A king’s glory is ¹  the abundance of people, but the lack of subjects ²  is the ruin ³  of a ruler.

Deliver those being taken away to death, and hold back those slipping to the slaughter. ¹ 

Too bad for the wicked sinners! For they will get exactly what they deserve. ¹ 

Those who pull evil along using cords of emptiness are as good as dead, ¹  who pull sin as with cart ropes. ² 

Assyria, the club I use to vent my anger, is as good as dead, ¹  a cudgel with which I angrily punish. ² 

The Lord says, ¹  “The leaders of my people are sure to be judged. ²  They were supposed to watch over my people like shepherds watch over their sheep. But they are causing my people to be destroyed and scattered. ³ 

“‘Therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says: Woe to the city of bloodshed! I will also make the pile high.

You refuse to believe a day of disaster will come, ¹  but you establish a reign of violence. ² 

Woe to the city guilty of bloodshed! ¹  She is full of lies; ²  she is filled with plunder; ³  she has hoarded her spoil! ⁴ 

as are those of Hamath also, which adjoins Damascus, and Tyre ¹  and Sidon, ²  though they consider themselves to be very wise.

For if there was glory in the ministry that produced condemnation, ¹  how much more does the ministry that produces righteousness ²  excel ³  in glory!

The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man through whom we can seek the Lord’s will. ¹  But I despise ²  him because he does not prophesy prosperity for me, but disaster. His name is Micaiah son of Imlah. ³  Jehoshaphat said, “The king should not say such things.”
