Listen to the cries of anguish of the leaders. Listen to the wails of the shepherds of the flocks. They are wailing because the Lord is about to destroy their lands. ¹ 

For this reason I ¹  will mourn and wail; I will walk around barefoot ²  and without my outer garments. ³  I will howl ⁴  like a wild dog, ⁵  and screech ⁶  like an owl. ⁷ 

Nineveh was like a pool ¹  of water ²  throughout her days, ³  but now ⁴  her people ⁵  are running away; ⁶  she cries out: ⁷  “Stop! Stop!” – but no one turns back. ⁸ 

He will yet ¹  fill your mouth with laughter, ²  and your lips with gladness.

when the morning stars ¹  sang ²  in chorus, ³  and all the sons of God ⁴  shouted for joy?

It scorns the tumult in the town; it does not hear the shouts of a driver. ¹ 

When he led his people out, they rejoiced; his chosen ones shouted with joy. ¹ 

Let them present thank offerings, and loudly proclaim what he has done! ¹ 

Those who shed tears as they plant will shout for joy when they reap the harvest. ¹ 

May your priests be clothed with integrity! ¹  May your loyal followers shout for joy!

I will protect her priests, ¹  and her godly people will shout exuberantly. ² 

Let the godly rejoice because of their vindication! ¹  Let them shout for joy upon their beds! ² 

“It’s worthless! It’s worthless!” ¹  says the buyer, ²  but when he goes on his way, he boasts. ³ 

Travel to Tarshish! Wail, you residents of the coast!

“Moab will be crushed. Her children will cry out in distress. ¹ 

At the sound of your captains’ cry the waves will surge; ¹ 

But the crowd ¹  began to shout, ²  “The voice of a god, ³  and not of a man!”

The Lord said, “I have surely seen ¹  the affliction of my people who are in Egypt. I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. ² 

The Lord emerges like a hero, like a warrior he inspires himself for battle; ¹  he shouts, yes, he yells, he shows his enemies his power. ² 

Let cries of terror be heard in their houses when you send bands of raiders unexpectedly to plunder them. ¹  For they have virtually dug a pit to capture me and have hidden traps for me to step into.
