While he was still speaking with them, Rachel arrived with her father’s sheep, for she was tending them. ¹ 

He put the servants and their children in front, with Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph behind them. ¹ 

But Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, hugged his neck, and kissed him. Then they both wept.

Then he purchased the portion of the field where he had pitched his tent; he bought it ¹  from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of money. ² 

So Israel’s sons came to buy grain among the other travelers, ¹  for the famine was severe in the land of Canaan.

Israel said, “Why did you bring this trouble ¹  on me by telling ²  the man you had one more brother?”

So the sons of Israel did as he said. ¹  Joseph gave them wagons as Pharaoh had instructed, ²  and he gave them provisions for the journey.

Then Israel said, “Enough! My son Joseph is still alive! I will go and see him before I die.”

So Israel began his journey, taking with him all that he had. ¹  When he came to Beer Sheba ²  he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

Israel said to Joseph, “Now let me die since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive.” ¹ 

Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected ¹  to see you ²  again, but now God has allowed me to see your children ³  too.”

Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you ¹  and will bring you back to the land of your fathers.

I ¹  have also heard ²  the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, ³  and I have remembered my covenant. ⁴ 

Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. The Reubenites: from ¹  Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; from Pallu, the family of the Palluites;

they will say about me, “Yes, the Lord is a powerful deliverer.”’” ¹  All who are angry at him will cower before him. ² 

The descendants of Jacob will enjoy their former privileges. Their community will be reestablished in my favor ¹  and I will punish all who try to oppress them.

‘Don’t preach with such impassioned rhetoric,’ they say excitedly. ¹  ‘These prophets should not preach of such things; we will not be overtaken by humiliation.’ ² 

and rejected Esau. ¹  I turned Esau’s ²  mountains into a deserted wasteland ³  and gave his territory ⁴  to the wild jackals.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed, ¹  “Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” ² 

On their second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers again, and Joseph’s family ¹  became known to Pharaoh.
