Above the sound of the surging water, ¹  and the mighty waves of the sea, the Lord sits enthroned in majesty. ² 

The Lord ¹  will cross the sea of storms and will calm its turbulence. The depths of the Nile will dry up, the pride of Assyria will be humbled, and the domination ²  of Egypt will be no more.

They ¹  came ²  and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, ³  we are about to die!” So ⁴  he got up and rebuked ⁵  the wind and the raging waves; ⁶  they died down, and it was calm.

But they encountered a patch of crosscurrents ¹  and ran the ship aground; the bow stuck fast and could not be moved, but the stern was being broken up by the force ²  of the waves.

At the sound of your captains’ cry the waves will surge; ¹ 

“You should fear me!” says the Lord. “You should tremble in awe before me! ¹  I made the sand to be a boundary for the sea, a permanent barrier that it can never cross. Its waves may roll, but they can never prevail. They may roar, but they can never cross beyond that boundary.” ² 

“And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, ¹  and on the earth nations will be in distress, ²  anxious ³  over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves.

The Lord has made a promise to Israel. He promises it as the one who fixed the sun to give light by day and the moon and stars to give light by night. He promises it as the one who stirs up the sea so that its waves roll. He promises it as the one who is known as the Lord who rules over all. ¹ 

But the wicked are like a surging sea that is unable to be quiet; its waves toss up mud and sand.

The many nations massing together are as good as dead, ¹  those who make a commotion as loud as the roaring of the sea’s waves. ²  The people making such an uproar are as good as dead, ³  those who make an uproar as loud as the roaring of powerful waves. ⁴ 

So ¹  we are no longer to be children, tossed back and forth by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching by the trickery of people who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes. ² 

And the men ¹  were amazed and said, ²  “What sort of person is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him!” ³ 

When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. ¹  The great deep ²  shouts out; it lifts its hands high. ³ 

But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, ¹  “Lord, save me!”

They were overwhelmed by fear and said to one another, “Who then is this? ¹  Even the wind and sea obey him!” ² 

But he must ask in faith without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed around by the wind.

The depths have covered them, ¹  they went down to the bottom ²  like a stone.

why it is so dark you cannot see, ¹  and why a flood ²  of water covers you.

The waves ¹  of death engulfed me, the currents ²  of chaos ³  overwhelmed me. ⁴ 

But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters. ¹
