On that day,” says the Lord, “a loud cry will go up ¹  from the Fish Gate, ²  wailing from the city’s newer district, ³  and a loud crash ⁴  from the hills.

Listen to the howling of shepherds, because their magnificence has been destroyed. Listen to the roaring of young lions, because the thickets of the Jordan have been devastated.

A great number of the people followed him, among them women ¹  who were mourning ²  and wailing for him.

My harp is used for ¹  mourning and my flute for the sound of weeping.

When Eli heard the outcry, ¹  he said, “What is this commotion?” ²  The man quickly came and told Eli.

O Lord, do not let me be humiliated, for I call out to you! May evil men be humiliated! May they go wailing to the grave! ¹ 

In their streets they wear sackcloth; on their roofs and in their town squares all of them wail, they fall down weeping.
