He followed in the footsteps of Ahab’s dynasty, ¹  for his mother gave him evil advice. ² 

“Therefore, ¹  blessed ²  is the man whom God corrects, ³  so do not despise the discipline ⁴  of the Almighty. ⁵ 

Listen, ¹  my child, ²  to the instruction ³  from ⁴  your father, and do not forsake the teaching ⁵  from ⁶  your mother.

My child, do not despise discipline from the Lord, ¹  and do not loathe ²  his rebuke.

For the commandments ¹  are like ²  a lamp, ³  instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like ⁴  the road leading to life, ⁵ 

The one who heeds instruction ¹  is on the way to ²  life, but the one who rejects ³  rebuke goes astray.

The one who neglects ¹  discipline ends up in ²  poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored. ³ 

The one who refuses correction despises himself, ¹  but whoever hears ²  reproof acquires understanding. ³ 

Discipline your child, for ¹  there is hope, but do not set your heart ²  on causing his death. ³ 

Do not withhold discipline from a child; even if you strike him with the rod, he will not die.

Discipline your child, and he will give you rest; ¹  he will bring you ²  happiness. ³ 

to equip ¹  the saints for the work of ministry, that is, ²  to build up the body of Christ,

And he has put it in his heart ¹  to teach, he and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.

Give instruction ¹  to a wise person, ²  and he will become wiser still; teach ³  a righteous person and he will add to his ⁴  learning.

“It did no good for me to punish your people. They did not respond to such correction. You slaughtered your prophets like a voracious lion.” ¹ 

Now all the Jews know the way I lived ¹  from my youth, spending my life from the beginning among my own people ²  and in Jerusalem. ³ 

Instead I subdue my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified.

So the king assigned them a daily ration ¹  from his royal delicacies ²  and from the wine he himself drank. They were to be trained ³  for the next three years. At the end of that time they were to enter the king’s service. ⁴ 

Bear in mind today that I am not speaking ¹  to your children who have not personally experienced the judgments ²  of the Lord your God, which revealed ³  his greatness, strength, and power. ⁴ 

I said, ¹  “So now, ²  you wailing women, hear what the Lord says. ³  Open your ears to the words from his mouth. Teach your daughters this mournful song, and each of you teach your neighbor ⁴  this lament.
