A faithful person ¹  will have an abundance of blessings, but the one who hastens ²  to gain riches will not go unpunished.

He then ¹  told them a parable: ²  “The land of a certain rich man produced ³  an abundant crop,

“There was a rich man who dressed in purple ¹  and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously ²  every day.

Tell them to do good, ¹  to be rich in good deeds, to be generous givers, sharing with others. ² 

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud ¹  over the miseries that are coming on you.

For you know the grace ¹  of our Lord Jesus Christ, that although he was rich, he became poor for your sakes, so that you by his poverty could become rich.

The Lord impoverishes and makes wealthy; he humbles and he exalts.

Fools ¹  are placed in many positions of authority, ²  while wealthy men sit in lowly positions.

He will not grow rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions ¹  spread over the land.

The blessing ¹  from the Lord ²  makes a person rich, ³  and he adds no sorrow ⁴  to ⁵  it.

Now ¹  when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. ² 

So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, ¹  but is not rich toward God.”

Now ¹  a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector ²  and was rich.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us,

The one who loves ¹  pleasure ²  will be ³  a poor person; ⁴  whoever loves wine and anointing oil ⁵  will not be rich.

who shows no partiality to princes, and does not take note of ¹  the rich more than the poor, because all of them are the work of his hands?

The one who oppresses the poor to increase his own gain and the one who gives to the rich ¹  – both end up only in poverty.

The sleep of the laborer is pleasant – whether he eats little or much – but the wealth of the rich will not allow him to sleep.

Like a cage filled with the birds that have been caught, ¹  their houses are filled with the gains of their fraud and deceit. ²  That is how they have gotten so rich and powerful. ³ 

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, ¹  it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven!
