the owner of the pit must repay ¹  the loss. He must give money ²  to its owner, and the dead animal ³  will become his.

The nations fell ¹  into the pit they had made; their feet were caught in the net they had hidden. ² 

Don’t let the current overpower me! Don’t let the deep swallow me up! Don’t let the pit ¹  devour me! ² 

The nations heard about him; he was trapped in their pit. They brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt. ¹ 

The nations – the surrounding regions – attacked him. They threw their net over him; he was caught in their pit.

They will bring you down to the pit, and you will die violently ¹  in the heart of the seas.

He ¹  draws near to the place of corruption, and his life to the messengers of death. ² 

He ¹  opened the shaft of the abyss and smoke rose out of it ²  like smoke from a giant furnace. The ³  sun and the air were darkened with smoke from the shaft.

who delivers ¹  your life from the Pit, ²  who crowns you with his loyal love and compassion,

The one who runs away from the sound of the terror will fall into the pit; ¹  the one who climbs out of the pit, will be trapped by the snare. For the floodgates of the heavens ²  are opened up ³  and the foundations of the earth shake.

then I will bring you down to bygone people, ¹  to be with those who descend to the pit. I will make you live in the lower parts of the earth, among ²  the primeval ruins, with those who descend to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited or stand ³  in the land of the living.

O Lord, you pulled me ¹  up from Sheol; you rescued me from among those descending into the grave. ² 

“What ¹  profit is there in taking my life, ²  in my descending into the Pit? ³  Can the dust of the grave ⁴  praise you? Can it declare your loyalty? ⁵ 

The one who digs a pit ¹  will fall into it; the one who rolls a stone – it will come back on him.

Indeed ¹  Sheol does not give you thanks; death does not ²  praise you. Those who descend into the pit do not anticipate your faithfulness.

Moreover, as for you, because of our covenant relationship secured with blood, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit.

He lifted me out of the watery pit, ¹  out of the slimy mud. ²  He placed my feet on a rock and gave me secure footing. ³ 

Anyone who flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit. Anyone who climbs out of the pit will be caught in a trap. ¹  For the time is coming when I will punish the people of Moab. ²  I, the Lord, affirm it! ³ 

and if ¹  God ²  is gracious to him and says, ‘Spare ³  him from going down to the place of corruption, I have found a ransom for him,’ ⁴ 

Answer me quickly, Lord! My strength is fading. ¹  Do not reject me, ²  or I will join ³  those descending into the grave. ⁴
