My eyes anticipate the nighttime hours, so that I can meditate on your word.

The sun will not harm you by day, or the moon by night. ¹ 

The watchman replies, “Morning is coming, but then night. ¹  If you want to ask, ask; come back again.” ² 

Now ¹  there were shepherds ²  nearby ³  living out in the field, keeping guard ⁴  over their flock at night.

They spend the night naked because they lack clothing; they have no covering against the cold.

Night pierces ¹  my bones; ²  my gnawing pains ³  never cease.

Now the Lord was going before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them in the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, ¹  so that they could ²  travel day or night. ³

¹ Then all the community raised a loud cry, ²  and the people wept ³  that night.

So he sent horses and chariots there, along with a good-sized army. ¹  They arrived during the night and surrounded the city.

That night God appeared ¹  to Solomon and said to him, “Tell me ²  what I should give you.”

“Let the day on which ¹  I was born ²  perish, and the night that said, ³  ‘A man ⁴  has been conceived!’ ⁵ 

In a dream, a night vision, when deep sleep falls on people as they sleep in their beds.

Instead ¹  he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands; ²  he meditates on ³  his commands ⁴  day and night.

Day and night they walk around on its walls, ¹  while wickedness and destruction ²  are within it.

You established the cycle of day and night; ¹  you put the moon ²  and sun in place. ³
