They said, ¹  “John the Baptist, others say Elijah, ²  and still others, one of the prophets.”

Now ¹  when the other ten ²  heard this, ³  they became angry with James and John.

John’s baptism – was it from heaven or from people? ¹  Answer me.”

He took Peter, James, ¹  and John with him, and became very troubled and distressed.

And in this way, ¹  with many other exhortations, John ²  proclaimed good news to the people.

Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison.

Simon ¹  (whom he named Peter), and his brother Andrew; and James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, ² 

John’s baptism ¹  – was it from heaven or from people?” ² 

Jesus ¹  sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover ²  for us to eat.” ³ 

John answered them, ¹  “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize, ² 

These things happened in Bethany ¹  across the Jordan River ²  where John was baptizing.

Again the next day John ¹  was standing there ²  with two of his disciples.

When John’s ¹  two disciples heard him say this, ²  they followed Jesus. ³ 

John replied, ¹  “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

You have sent to John, ¹  and he has testified to the truth.

Peter looked directly ¹  at him (as did John) and said, “Look at us!”

Then Peter and John placed their hands on the Samaritans, ¹  and they received the Holy Spirit. ² 

you know what happened throughout Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John announced: ¹ 

He had James, the brother of John, executed with a sword. ¹ 

Before ¹  Jesus ²  arrived, John ³  had proclaimed a baptism for repentance ⁴  to all the people of Israel.
