(Now ¹  they did not know that Joseph could understand them, ²  for he was speaking through an interpreter.) ³ 

They made shoulder pieces for it, attached to two of its corners, so it could be joined together.

He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors.

The tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe ¹  of Benjamin, saying, “How could such a wicked thing take place? ² 

When the Israelites turned around, the Benjaminites panicked ¹  because they could see that disaster was on their doorstep. ² 

Then David and the men ¹  who were with him wept loudly ²  until they could weep no more. ³ 

King David was very old; ¹  even when they covered him with blankets, ²  he could not get warm.

The priests could not carry out their duties ¹  because of the cloud; the Lord’s glory filled his temple. ² 

He built high places for all his foreign wives so they could burn incense and make sacrifices to their gods. ¹ 

The priests and Levites consecrated themselves so they could bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel.

In those days ¹  no one could travel safely, ²  for total chaos had overtaken all the people of the surrounding lands. ³ 

O that I knew ¹  where I might find him, ²  that I could come ³  to his place of residence! ⁴ 

There ¹  an upright person could present his case ²  before him, and I would be delivered forever from my judge.

Will it make a pact ¹  with you, so you could take it ²  as your slave for life?

But then one passes by, and suddenly they have disappeared! ¹  I looked for them, but they could not be found.

If you, O Lord, were to keep track of ¹  sins, O Lord, who could stand before you? ² 

You counted the houses in Jerusalem, ¹  and demolished houses so you could have material to reinforce the wall. ² 

Not even Lebanon could supply enough firewood for a sacrifice; ¹  its wild animals would not provide enough burnt offerings. ² 

Then the Lord said to me, “Under the circumstances, wayward Israel could even be considered less guilty than unfaithful Judah. ¹ 

I also gave ¹  them decrees ²  which were not good and regulations by which they could not live.
