Those who stray morally will gain understanding; ¹  those who complain will acquire insight. ² 

Then he gives a revelation ¹  to people, and terrifies them with warnings, ² 

And you will say, “How I hated discipline! My heart spurned reproof!

The people of those nations ¹  are both stupid and foolish. Instruction from a wooden idol is worthless! ² 

Fearing the Lord ¹  is the beginning ²  of moral knowledge, ³  but ⁴  fools ⁵  despise ⁶  wisdom and instruction. ⁷ 

Give instruction ¹  to a wise person, ²  and he will become wiser still; teach ³  a righteous person and he will add to his ⁴  learning.

For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge of sacred things, and people should seek instruction from him ¹  because he is the messenger of the Lord who rules over all.

For these are rebellious people – they are lying children, children unwilling to obey the Lord’s law. ¹ 

teaching about baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

Fathers, ¹  do not provoke your children to anger, ²  but raise them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

He will die because ¹  there was no discipline; because of the greatness of his folly ²  he will reel. ³ 

The one who neglects ¹  discipline ends up in ²  poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored. ³ 

The one who loves discipline loves knowledge, ¹  but the one who hates reproof is stupid. ² 

She opens her mouth ¹  with wisdom, and loving instruction ²  is on her tongue.

Your ancestors, ¹  however, did not listen to me or pay any attention to me. They stubbornly refused ²  to pay attention or to respond to any discipline.’

For everything that was written in former times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and through encouragement of the scriptures we may have hope.

But the aim of our instruction ¹  is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. ² 

For the commandments ¹  are like ²  a lamp, ³  instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like ⁴  the road leading to life, ⁵ 

Insight ¹  is like ²  a life-giving fountain ³  to the one who possesses it, but folly leads to the discipline of fools. ⁴ 

Now the one who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with the one who teaches ¹  it.
