He unrolled it before me, and it had writing on the front ¹  and back; ²  written on it were laments, mourning, and woe.

to the latter an odor ¹  from death to death, but to the former a fragrance from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? ² 

saying, “Woe, woe, O great city – dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet clothing, ¹  and adorned with gold, ²  precious stones, and pearls –

men ¹  who were carried off ²  before their time, ³  when the flood ⁴  was poured out ⁵  on their foundations? ⁶ 

The Lord works ¹  everything for its own ends ²  – even the wicked for the day of disaster. ³ 

A cheerful heart ¹  brings good healing, ²  but a crushed spirit ³  dries up the bones. ⁴ 

Those who think they are wise are as good as dead, ¹  those who think they possess understanding. ² 

Those who enact unjust policies are as good as dead, ¹  those who are always instituting unfair regulations, ² 

The land of buzzing wings is as good as dead, ¹  the one beyond the rivers of Cush,

Do not cause me dismay! ¹  You are my source of safety in times of trouble.

An end comes ¹  – the end comes! ²  It has awakened against you ³  – the end is upon you! Look, it is coming! ⁴ 

The filthy, ¹  stained city is as good as dead; the city filled with oppressors is finished! ² 

And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Then ¹  I looked, and I heard an ²  eagle ³  flying directly overhead, ⁴  proclaiming with a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe to those who live on the earth because of the remaining sounds of the trumpets of the three angels who are about to blow them!” ⁵ 

The first woe has passed, but ¹  two woes are still coming after these things!

For though I, the Lord who rules over all, ¹  planted you in the land, ²  I now decree that disaster will come on you ³  because the nations of Israel and Judah have done evil and have made me angry by offering sacrifices to the god Baal.” ⁴ 

May those who persecute me be disgraced. Do not let me be disgraced. May they be dismayed. Do not let me be dismayed. Bring days of disaster on them. Bring on them the destruction they deserve.” ¹ 

So I, the Lord God of Israel who rules over all, say: ¹  ‘I will punish the king of Babylon and his land just as I punished the king of Assyria.

Woe to the worthless shepherd who abandons the flock! May a sword fall on his arm and his right eye! May his arm wither completely away, and his right eye become completely blind!”

“Woe to you, Chorazin! ¹  Woe to you, Bethsaida! If ²  the miracles ³  done in you had been done in Tyre ⁴  and Sidon, ⁵  they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
