Joshua campaigned against ¹  these kings for quite some time. ² 

Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes ¹  as he stood there before the angel.

Then the angel of the Lord exhorted Joshua solemnly:

Joshua drew lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord and divided the land among the Israelites according to their allotted portions.

Yet Joshua spared ¹  Rahab the prostitute, her father’s family, ²  and all who belonged to her. She lives in Israel ³  to this very day because she hid the messengers Joshua sent to spy on Jericho. ⁴ 

Moses the Lord’s servant passed on the Lord’s commands to Joshua, and Joshua did as he was told. He did not ignore any of the commands the Lord had given Moses. ¹ 

So Moses set out ¹  with ²  Joshua his attendant, and Moses went up the mountain of God.

except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’

Joshua told the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh:

Joshua told the people, “Ritually consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will perform miraculous deeds among you.”

Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God!”

When the entire nation was on the other side, ¹  the Lord told Joshua,

Joshua summoned the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one per tribe.

Now Joshua set up in Gilgal the ¹  twelve stones they had taken from the Jordan.

So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hill of the Foreskins. ¹ 

Bright and early the next morning Joshua had the priests pick up the ark of the Lord. ¹ 

The Lord responded ¹  to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying there face down? ² 

Bright and early the next morning Joshua made Israel approach in tribal order ¹  and the tribe of Judah was selected.

Joshua and all Israel pretended to be defeated by them and they retreated along the way to the desert.

Joshua kept holding out his curved sword until Israel had annihilated all who lived in Ai. ¹
