Woe to the city guilty of bloodshed! ¹  She is full of lies; ²  she is filled with plunder; ³  she has hoarded her spoil! ⁴ 

Increase ¹  your merchants more than the stars of heaven! They are like ²  the young locust which sheds ³  its skin and flies away.

But when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he was very rich. ¹ 

Now ¹  when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. ² 

But at this statement, the man ¹  looked sad and went away sorrowful, for he was very rich. ² 

He then ¹  told them a parable: ²  “The land of a certain rich man produced ³  an abundant crop,

“There was a rich man who dressed in purple ¹  and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously ²  every day.

Now ¹  a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector ²  and was rich.

For you were made rich ¹  in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge ²  –

as sorrowful, but always rejoicing, as poor, but making many rich, as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

You will be enriched in every way so that you may be generous on every occasion, ¹  which is producing through us thanksgiving to God,

And my God will supply your every need according to his glorious riches ¹  in Christ Jesus.

Tell them to do good, ¹  to be rich in good deeds, to be generous givers, sharing with others. ² 

But the rich person’s pride should be in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a wildflower in the meadow. ¹ 

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud ¹  over the miseries that are coming on you.

All the people who were at the gate and the elders replied, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is entering your home like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built up the house of Israel! May ¹  you prosper ²  in Ephrathah and become famous ³  in Bethlehem. ⁴ 

A man who is all alone with no companion, ¹  he has no children nor siblings; ²  yet there is no end to all his toil, and he ³  is never satisfied with riches. He laments, ⁴  “For whom am I toiling and depriving myself ⁵  of pleasure?” ⁶  This also is futile and a burdensome task! ⁷ 

For this is what the Lord says: “Look, I am ready to extend to her prosperity that will flow like a river, the riches of nations will flow into her like a stream that floods its banks. ¹  You will nurse from her breast ²  and be carried at her side; you will play on her knees.

In a time of prosperity for the most productive areas of the province he will come and accomplish what neither his fathers nor their fathers accomplished. He will distribute loot, spoils, and property to his followers, and he will devise plans against fortified cities, but not for long. ¹ 

This is what the Lord says: “The profit ¹  of Egypt and the revenue ²  of Ethiopia, along with the Sabeans, those tall men, will be brought to you ³  and become yours. They will walk behind you, coming along in chains. ⁴  They will bow down to you and pray to you: ⁵  ‘Truly God is with ⁶  you; he has no peer; ⁷  there is no other God!’”
