He took five thousand men and set an ambush west of the city between Bethel ¹  and Ai.

Twelve thousand men and women died ¹  that day, including all the men of Ai.

The Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered the leaders ¹  of the Israelite clans:

One of you makes a thousand run away, ¹  for the Lord your God fights for you ²  as he promised you he would. ³

So the Philistines fought. Israel was defeated; they all ran home. ¹  The slaughter was very great; thirty thousand foot soldiers fell in battle.

He will appoint for himself leaders of thousands and leaders of fifties, ¹  as well as those who plow his ground, reap his harvest, and make his weapons of war and his chariot equipment.
