At the risk ¹  of our lives ²  we get our food ³  because robbers lurk ⁴  in the countryside. ⁵ 

When she saw them, ¹  she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. ² 

I have appointed a time to reap judgment ¹  for you also, O Judah!Whenever I want to restore the fortunes of my people, ² 

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness ¹  to be tempted by the devil.

But he said, ‘No, since in gathering the weeds you may uproot the wheat with them.

In the wilderness ¹  John the baptizer ²  began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ³ 

Then ¹  Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River ²  and was led by the Spirit ³  in ⁴  the wilderness, ⁵ 

But they were filled with mindless rage ¹  and began debating with one another what they would do ²  to Jesus.

But they all shouted out together, ¹  “Take this man ²  away! Release Barabbas for us!”

When they heard these things, they became furious ¹  and ground their teeth ²  at him.

Now Peter continued knocking, and when they opened the door ¹  and saw him, they were greatly astonished. ² 

For they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.” ¹ 

But the rich person’s pride should be in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a wildflower in the meadow. ¹ 

But no human being can subdue the tongue; it is a restless ¹  evil, full of deadly poison.

But in the seventh year ¹  you must let it lie fallow and leave it alone so that the poor of your people may eat, and what they leave any animal in the field ²  may eat; you must do likewise with your vineyard and your olive grove.

“‘Any person ¹  who eats an animal that has died of natural causes ²  or an animal torn by beasts, whether a native citizen or a foreigner, ³  must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening; then he becomes clean.

I said, ¹  “I will weep and mourn ²  for the grasslands on the mountains, ³  I will sing a mournful song for the pastures in the wilderness because they are so scorched no one travels through them. The sound of livestock is no longer heard there. Even the birds in the sky and the wild animals in the fields have fled and are gone.”

They will die of deadly diseases. No one will mourn for them. They will not be buried. Their dead bodies will lie like manure spread on the ground. They will be killed in war or die of starvation. Their corpses will be food for the birds and wild animals.

And I said, “Ah, sovereign Lord, I have never been ceremonially defiled before. I have never eaten a carcass or an animal torn by wild beasts; from my youth up, unclean meat ¹  has never entered my mouth.”

I will leave you in the wilderness, you and all the fish of your waterways; you will fall in the open field and will not be gathered up or collected. ¹  I have given you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the skies.
