Sorrow ¹  is better than laughter, because sober reflection ²  is good for the heart. ³ 

As for their enemies, ¹  they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress ²  and suffering.

I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. ¹ 

For with great wisdom comes ¹  great frustration; whoever increases his ²  knowledge merely ³  increases his ⁴  heartache.

For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death.

You will be overcome by ¹  drunkenness and sorrow. The cup of your sister Samaria is a cup of horror and desolation.

The blessing ¹  from the Lord ²  makes a person rich, ³  and he adds no sorrow ⁴  to ⁵  it.

A joyful heart ¹  makes the face cheerful, ²  but by a painful heart the spirit is broken.

Then I said, ¹  “There is no cure ²  for my grief! I am sick at heart!

In fact he became so ill that he nearly died. ¹  But God showed mercy to him – and not to him only, but also to me – so that I would not have grief on top of grief.

How long must I worry, ¹  and suffer in broad daylight? ²  How long will my enemy gloat over me? ³ 

Who has woe? ¹  Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has dullness ²  of the eyes?

Why did I ever come forth from my mother’s womb? All I experience is trouble and grief, and I spend my days in shame. ¹ 

For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. ¹ 

When ¹  he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted ²  from grief.

The ropes of death tightened around me, ¹  the snares ²  of Sheol confronted me. I was confronted ³  with trouble and sorrow.

so that now instead ¹  you should rather forgive and comfort him. ²  This will keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive grief to the point of despair. ³ 

I collapse ¹  from grief. Sustain me by your word! ²
