Fear and panic overpower me; ¹  terror overwhelms ²  me.

The water would have overpowered us; the current ¹  would have overwhelmed ²  us. ³ 

He guided them safely along, while the sea covered their enemies.

My strength leaves me; ¹  I am absolutely shocked. ² 

so that now instead ¹  you should rather forgive and comfort him. ²  This will keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive grief to the point of despair. ³
