Discretion ¹  will protect you, ²  understanding will guard you,

They are a nation devoid of wisdom, and there is no understanding among them.

Will they not ¹  instruct you and ²  speak to you, and bring forth words ³  from their understanding? ⁴ 

Is not wisdom found among the aged? ¹  Does not long life bring understanding?

“With God ¹  are wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his. ² 

Because ¹  you have closed their ²  minds to understanding, therefore you will not exalt them. ³ 

When ¹  I hear a reproof that dishonors ²  me, then my understanding ³  prompts me to answer. ⁴ 

“But wisdom – where can it be found? Where is the place of understanding?

“But wisdom – where does it come from? ¹  Where is the place of understanding?

“If you have ¹  understanding, listen to this, hear what I have to say. ² 

Men of understanding say to me – any wise man listening to me says –

that ¹  Job speaks without knowledge and his words are without understanding. ² 

God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways; ¹  he does great things beyond our understanding. ² 

Who has put wisdom in the heart, ¹  or has imparted understanding to the mind?

For God deprived her of wisdom, and did not impart understanding to her.

“Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars, ¹  and spreads its wings toward the south?

Teach me proper discernment ¹  and understanding! For I consider your commands to be reliable. ² 

by making ¹  your ear ²  attentive to wisdom, and ³  by turning ⁴  your heart ⁵  to understanding,

indeed, if ¹  you call out for ²  discernment ³  – raise your voice ⁴  for understanding –

For ¹  the Lord gives ²  wisdom, and from his mouth ³  comes ⁴  knowledge and understanding.
