So ¹  Pilate ²  decided ³  that their demand should be granted.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged severely. ¹ 

Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ¹  Then Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

They ¹  tied him up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate ²  the governor. ³ 

So ¹  Pilate asked him, “Are you the king ²  of the Jews?” He replied, ³  “You say so.” ⁴ 

But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate asked them, “Why? What has he done wrong?” But they shouted more insistently, “Crucify him!”

When Pilate ¹  was informed by the centurion, ²  he gave the body to Joseph.

Then ¹  the whole group of them rose up and brought Jesus ²  before Pilate. ³ 

So ¹  Pilate asked Jesus, ²  “Are you the king ³  of the Jews?” He replied, “You say so.” ⁴ 

Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.

Then ¹  Pilate called together the chief priests, the ²  rulers, and the people,

Pilate addressed them once again because he wanted ¹  to release Jesus.

He went to Pilate and asked for the body ¹  of Jesus.

So Pilate came outside to them and said, “What accusation ¹  do you bring against this man?” ² 

When Pilate heard what they said, ¹  he was more afraid than ever, ² 

Then Pilate ¹  handed him over ²  to them to be crucified.So they took Jesus,

Though ¹  they found ²  no basis ³  for a death sentence, ⁴  they asked Pilate to have him executed.

After this, Joseph of Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus (but secretly, because he feared the Jewish leaders ¹ ), ²  asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. Pilate ³  gave him permission, so he went and took the body away. ⁴
