He ¹  leads ²  counselors away stripped ³  and makes judges ⁴  into fools. ⁵

The Lord impoverishes and makes wealthy; he humbles and he exalts.

He makes nations great, ¹  and destroys them; he extends the boundaries of nations and disperses ²  them. ³ 

They grope about in darkness ¹  without light; he makes them stagger ²  like drunkards.

But it is a spirit in people, the breath ¹  of the Almighty, that makes them understand.

For he says, ‘It does not profit a man when he makes his delight with God.’ ¹ 

Do you know how God commands them, ¹  how he makes lightning flash in his storm cloud? ² 

It makes its tail stiff ¹  like a cedar, the sinews of its thighs are tightly wound.

He judges the world fairly; he makes just legal decisions for the nations. ¹

He makes the barren woman of the family ¹  a happy mother of children. ²  Praise the Lord!

For he makes the bars of your gates strong. He blesses your children ¹  within you.
