But ¹  they could not reply ²  to this.

I also could speak ¹  like you, if ²  you were in my place; I could pile up ³  words against you and I could shake my head at you. ⁴ 

Absolutely not! For otherwise how could God judge the world?

Every ¹  island fled away ²  and no mountains could be found. ³ 

I wish that they were wise and could understand this, and that they could comprehend what will happen to them.”

Although ¹  I am innocent, ²  I could not answer him; ³  I could only plead ⁴  with my judge ⁵  for mercy.

“I made a covenant with ¹  my eyes; how then could I entertain thoughts against a virgin? ² 

You held my eyelids open; ¹  I was troubled and could not speak. ² 

He turned their rivers into blood, and they could not drink from their streams.

Those who worship ¹  worthless idols ²  forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. ³ 

But the Pharisees went out and plotted against him, as to how they could assassinate ¹  him.

All the crowds were amazed and said, “Could this one be the Son of David?”
