But when they gazed intently ¹  from a distance but did not recognize ²  him, they began to weep loudly. Each of them tore his robes, and they threw dust into the air over their heads. ³ 

So they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left. ¹ 

Bright and early the next morning Joshua had the priests pick up the ark of the Lord. ¹

Then the cherubim spread ¹  their wings with their wheels alongside them while the glory of the God of Israel hovered above them.

When the men with a skin disease reached the edge of the camp, they entered a tent and had a meal. ¹  They also took some silver, gold, and clothes and went and hid it all. ²  Then they went back and entered another tent. They looted it ³  and went and hid what they had taken.

The flood engulfed the earth for forty days. As the waters increased, they lifted the ark and raised it above the earth.

When ¹  Pharaoh got closer, ²  the Israelites looked up, ³  and there were the Egyptians marching after them, ⁴  and they were terrified. ⁵  The Israelites cried out to the Lord, ⁶ 

When the Lord’s messenger finished speaking these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. ¹ 

So the people came to Bethel ¹  and sat there before God until evening, weeping loudly and uncontrollably. ² 

So her sons ¹  married ²  Moabite women. (One was named Orpah and the other Ruth.) ³  And they continued to live there about ten years.

Now the residents of Beth Shemesh were harvesting wheat in the valley. When they looked up and saw the ark, they were pleased at the sight.

When the messengers went to Gibeah (where Saul lived) ¹  and informed the people of these matters, all the people wept loudly. ² 

They took Asahel’s body and buried him in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem. ¹  Joab and his men then traveled all that night and reached Hebron by dawn.

Just as he finished speaking, the king’s sons arrived, wailing and weeping. ¹  The king and all his servants wept loudly ²  as well.

They stripped his corpse, and then carried off his head and his armor. They sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines proclaiming the news to their idols and their people.

The descendants of Levi carried the ark of God on their shoulders with poles, just as Moses had ordered according to the divine command.
