The Lord told Jeremiah, “Tell ¹  Shemaiah the Nehelamite ² 

In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were evening!’ And in the evening you will say, ‘I wish it were morning!’ because of the things you will fear and the things you will see.

The person who lives in Zion says, “May Babylon pay for the violence done to me and to my relatives.” Jerusalem says, “May those living in Babylonia pay for the bloodshed of my people.” ¹ 

But you say, ‘What will it profit you,’ ¹  and, ‘What do I gain by not sinning?’ ² 

at the head of the noisy ¹  streets she calls, in the entrances of the gates in the city ²  she utters her words: ³ 

Do not say, ¹  “I will pay back ²  evil!” Wait ³  for the Lord, so that he may vindicate you. ⁴ 

If you think, “These nations are more numerous than I – how can I dispossess them?”

Now if you say to yourselves, ¹  ‘How can we tell that a message is not from the Lord?’ ²  –

Jonathan replied to David, “Tell me what I can do for you.” ¹ 

How much less, then, when you say that you do not perceive him, that the case is before him and you are waiting for him! ¹ 

Do not say to your neighbor, “Go! Return tomorrow and I will give it,” when ¹  you have it with you at the time. ² 

Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will pay him back ¹  according to what he has done.” ² 

Why do you say, Jacob, Why do you say, Israel, “The Lord is not aware of what is happening to me, ¹  My God is not concerned with my vindication”? ² 

Now they come into being, ¹  not in the past; before today you did not hear about them, so you could not say, ‘Yes, ²  I know about them.’

Each of you should merely ask the prophet, ‘What answer did the Lord give you? Or what did the Lord say?’ ¹ 

Will you still say, “I am a god,” before the one who kills you – though you are a man and not a god – when you are in the power of those who wound you?

The young advisers with whom Rehoboam ¹  had grown up said to him, “Say this to these people who have said to you, ‘Your father made us work hard, but now lighten our burden’ ²  – say this to them: ‘I am a lot harsher than my father! ³ 

that I will take nothing ¹  belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal. That way you can never say, ‘It is I ²  who made Abram rich.’

God said to Moses, “I am that I am.” ¹  And he said, “You must say this ²  to the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

Moses ¹  went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, “Thus you will tell the house of Jacob, and declare to the people ²  of Israel:
