from Zerah, ¹  the family of the Zerahites; and from Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.

It was reported to Saul saying, “David is at Naioth in Ramah.”

For my life ¹  is filled with troubles and I am ready to enter Sheol. ² 

Saul’s watchmen at Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin ¹  looked on ²  as the crowd of soldiers seemed to melt away first in one direction and then in another. ³ 

Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. When they told Saul about this, it ¹  pleased him.

When Saul learned that David had fled to Gath, he did not mount a new search for him.

You will not abandon me ¹  to Sheol; ²  you will not allow your faithful follower ³  to see ⁴  the Pit. ⁵ 

O Lord, do not let me be humiliated, for I call out to you! May evil men be humiliated! May they go wailing to the grave! ¹ 

One time Acsah ¹  came and charmed her father ²  so that she could ask him for some land. When she got down from her donkey, Caleb said to her, “What would you like?”

Now it was reported to Saul, “Look, the army is sinning against the Lord by eating even the blood.” He said, “All of you have broken the covenant! ¹  Roll a large stone over here to me.”

This made Saul very angry. The statement displeased him and he thought, ¹  “They have attributed to David tens of thousands, but to me they have attributed only thousands. What does he lack, except the kingdom?”

When it was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they prophesied too. So Saul sent messengers a third time, but they also prophesied.

(One of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was Doeg the Edomite, who was in charge of Saul’s shepherds.)

When Saul was told that David had come to Keilah, Saul said, “God has delivered ¹  him into my hand, for he has boxed himself into a corner by entering a city with two barred gates.” ² 

Afterward David’s conscience bothered him ¹  because he had cut off an edge of Saul’s robe.

David said to Saul, “Why do you pay attention when men say, ‘David is seeking to do you harm’?

David promised Saul this on oath. ¹  Then Saul went to his house, and David and his men went up to the stronghold.
