then you plunge me into a slimy pit ¹  and my own clothes abhor me.

He ¹  draws near to the place of corruption, and his life to the messengers of death. ² 

who delivers ¹  your life from the Pit, ²  who crowns you with his loyal love and compassion,

If I cry ¹  to corruption, ²  ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My Mother,’ or ‘My sister,’

He spares a person’s life from corruption, ¹  his very life from crossing over ²  the river.

and if ¹  God ²  is gracious to him and says, ‘Spare ³  him from going down to the place of corruption, I have found a ransom for him,’ ⁴ 

He redeemed my life ¹  from going down to the place of corruption, and my life sees the light!’

to turn back his life from the place of corruption, that he may be enlightened with the light of life.

he digs a pit ¹  and then falls into the hole he has made. ² 

so that he might continue to live ¹  forever and not experience death. ² 

in order to protect him from times of trouble, ¹  until the wicked are destroyed. ² 

The one who digs a pit ¹  will fall into it; the one who rolls a stone – it will come back on him.

They will bring you down to the pit, and you will die violently ¹  in the heart of the seas.

The nations fell ¹  into the pit they had made; their feet were caught in the net they had hidden. ² 

You will not abandon me ¹  to Sheol; ²  you will not allow your faithful follower ³  to see ⁴  the Pit. ⁵ 

“What ¹  profit is there in taking my life, ²  in my descending into the Pit? ³  Can the dust of the grave ⁴  praise you? Can it declare your loyalty? ⁵ 

I did not harm them, but they hid a net to catch me and dug a pit to trap me. ¹ 

The one who suffers ¹  will soon be released; he will not die in prison, ²  he will not go hungry. ³ 

The nations heard about him; he was trapped in their pit. They brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt. ¹ 

The nations – the surrounding regions – attacked him. They threw their net over him; he was caught in their pit.
