So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial pillar.

They hauled out the sacred pillar of the temple of Baal and burned it.

You must not erect a sacred pillar, ¹  a thing the Lord your God detests.

“Here is this pile of stones and this pillar I have set up between me and you,” Laban said to Jacob. ¹ 

Jacob set up a marker ¹  over her grave; it is ²  the Marker of Rachel’s Grave to this day.

Rather you must destroy their altars, smash their images, and cut down their Asherah poles. ¹

At that time there will be an altar for the Lord in the middle of the land of Egypt, as well as a sacred pillar ¹  dedicated to the Lord at its border.

Their heart is slipping; soon they will be punished for their guilt. The Lord ¹  will break their altars; he will completely destroy their fertility pillars.

I will remove your idols and sacred pillars from your midst; you will no longer worship what your own hands made.

“This pile of stones and the pillar are reminders that I will not pass beyond this pile to come to harm you and that you will not pass beyond this pile and this pillar to come to harm me. ¹ 

Early ¹  in the morning Jacob ²  took the stone he had placed near his head ³  and set it up as a sacred stone. ⁴  Then he poured oil on top of it.

Then this stone ¹  that I have set up as a sacred stone will be the house of God, and I will surely ²  give you back a tenth of everything you give me.” ³ 

So Jacob set up a sacred stone pillar in the place where God spoke with him. ¹  He poured out a drink offering on it, and then he poured oil on it. ² 

“You must not bow down to their gods; you must not serve them or do according to their practices. Instead you must completely overthrow them and smash their standing stones ¹  to pieces. ² 

Instead, this is what you must do to them: You must tear down their altars, shatter their sacred pillars, ¹  cut down their sacred Asherah poles, ²  and burn up their idols.
