“You shall not steal. ¹ 

You must not steal.

But if it was stolen ¹  from him, ²  he will pay its owner.

Animals torn by wild beasts I never brought to you; I always absorbed the loss myself. ¹  You always made me pay for every missing animal, ²  whether it was taken by day or at night.

Terrors overwhelm him like a flood; ¹  at night a whirlwind carries him off.

“Stolen waters ¹  are sweet, and food obtained in secret ²  is pleasant!”

for I really was kidnapped ¹  from the land of the Hebrews and I have done nothing wrong here for which they should put me in a dungeon.”

That day the people stole away to go to the city the way people who are embarrassed steal away in fleeing from battle.

“Whoever kidnaps someone ¹  and sells him, ²  or is caught still holding him, ³  must surely be put to death.

“‘You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen. ¹ 

“Now a word was secretly ¹  brought ²  to me, and my ear caught ³  a whisper ⁴  of it.

How often ¹  are they like straw before the wind, and like chaff swept away ²  by a whirlwind?

While Laban had gone to shear his sheep, ¹  Rachel stole the household idols ²  that belonged to her father.

Now I understand that ¹  you have gone away ²  because you longed desperately ³  for your father’s house. Yet why did you steal my gods?” ⁴ 

People ¹  do not despise a thief when he steals to fulfill his need ²  when he is hungry.

lest I become satisfied and act deceptively ¹  and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or lest I become poor and steal and demean ²  the name of my God.

So I, the Lord, affirm ¹  that I am opposed to those prophets who steal messages from one another that they claim are from me. ² 

There is only cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery. They resort to violence and bloodshed. ¹ 

Jacob also deceived ¹  Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was leaving. ² 

“What have you done?” Laban demanded of Jacob. “You’ve deceived me ¹  and carried away my daughters as if they were captives of war! ²
