Have you ¹  not made a hedge ²  around him and his household and all that he has on every side? You have blessed ³  the work of his hands, and his livestock ⁴  have increased ⁵  in the land.

Then the Lord said, ¹  “As for you, Jeremiah, ²  do not pray for these people! Do not cry out to me or petition me on their behalf! Do not plead with me to save them, ³  because I will not listen to you.

He went in by himself and closed the door. ¹  Then he prayed to the Lord.

Why is light given ¹  to a man ²  whose way is hidden, ³  and whom God has hedged in? ⁴ 

“Have I ¹  ever said, ²  ‘Give me something, and from your fortune ³  make gifts ⁴  in my favor’?

he who commands the sun and ¹  it does not shine ²  and seals up ³  the stars;

But you have said, ‘What does God know? Does he judge through such deep darkness? ¹ 

But you, Lord, are a shield that protects me; ¹  you are my glory ²  and the one who restores me. ³
