“I destroyed ¹  nations; their walled cities ²  are in ruins. I turned their streets into ruins; no one passes through them. Their cities are desolate; ³  no one lives there. ⁴ 

The mighty lion ¹  perishes ²  for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness ³  are scattered.

They are destroyed ¹  between morning and evening; ²  they perish forever ³  without anyone regarding it. ⁴ 

Can the papyrus plant grow tall ¹  where there is no marsh? Can reeds flourish ²  without water?

Fire resides in his tent; ¹  over his residence burning sulfur is scattered.

They spend the night naked because they lack clothing; they have no covering against the cold.

They are soaked by mountain rains and huddle ¹  in the rocks because they lack shelter.

They go about naked, without clothing, and go hungry while they carry the sheaves. ¹ 

If I have seen anyone about to perish for lack of clothing, or a poor man without a coat,

if I have eaten its produce without paying, ¹  or caused the death ²  of its owners, ³ 

Concerning my right, should I lie? ¹  My wound ²  is incurable, although I am without transgression.’ ³ 

So Job opens his mouth to no purpose; ¹  without knowledge he multiplies words.”

But if they refuse to listen, they pass over the river of death, ¹  and expire without knowledge.

“Who is this ¹  who darkens counsel ²  with words without knowledge?

She is harsh ¹  with her young, as if they were not hers; she is unconcerned about the uselessness of her labor.

Whoever strikes it with a sword ¹  will have no effect, ²  nor with the spear, arrow, or dart.

The likes of it is not on earth, a creature ¹  without fear.

There is no actual speech or word, nor is its ¹  voice literally heard.

Though I have done nothing wrong, ¹  they are anxious to attack. ²  Spring into action and help me! Take notice of me! ³ 

During his days the godly will flourish; ¹  peace will prevail as long as the moon remains in the sky. ²
