For the outlook ¹  of the flesh is death, but the outlook of the Spirit is life and peace,

But you know it was because of a physical illness that I first proclaimed the gospel to you,

But I say, live ¹  by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. ² 

Now the works of the flesh ¹  are obvious: ²  sexual immorality, impurity, depravity,

They served only for matters of food and drink ¹  and various washings; they are external regulations ²  imposed until the new order came. ³ 

save ¹  others by snatching them out of the fire; have mercy ²  on others, coupled with a fear of God, ³  hating even the clothes stained ⁴  by the flesh. ⁵ 

For God achieved what the law could not do because ¹  it was weakened through the flesh. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,

among whom ¹  all of us ²  also ³  formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath ⁴  even as the rest… ⁵ 

– children not born ¹  by human parents ²  or by human desire ³  or a husband’s ⁴  decision, ⁵  but by God.

What is born of the flesh is flesh, ¹  and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

just as you have given him authority over all humanity, ¹  so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him. ² 

For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by ¹  the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit.

Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to arouse its desires. ¹ 

but now he has reconciled you ¹  by his physical body through death to present you holy, without blemish, and blameless before him –

by the fresh and living way that he inaugurated for us ¹  through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, ² 

For by speaking high-sounding but empty words ¹  they are able to entice, ²  with fleshly desires and with debauchery, ³  people ⁴  who have just escaped ⁵  from those who reside in error. ⁶ 

because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.

This means ¹  it is not the children of the flesh ²  who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants.

turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved ¹  in the day of the Lord. ² 

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves ¹  from everything that could defile the body ²  and the spirit, and thus accomplish ³  holiness out of reverence for God. ⁴
