In him was life, ¹  and the life was the light of mankind. ² 

In the beginning ¹  was the Word, and the Word was with God, ²  and the Word was fully God. ³ 

Yet even on this point their testimony did not agree.

It was nine o’clock in the morning ¹  when they crucified him.

It was the day of preparation ¹  and the Sabbath was beginning. ² 

The Word ¹  was with God in the beginning.

(For John had not yet been thrown into prison.) ¹ 

They ¹  brought him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. ² 

Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest, since there are already priests who offer ¹  the gifts prescribed by the law.

He was in the wilderness forty days, ¹  enduring temptations from Satan. He ²  was with wild animals, and angels were ministering to his needs. ³ 

So ¹  after leaving the crowd, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat, ²  and other boats were with him.

But they did not have a child, because Elizabeth was barren, ¹  and they were both very old. ² 

because this son of mine was dead, and is alive again – he was lost and is found!’ ¹  So ²  they began to celebrate.

John ¹  was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, ²  because water was plentiful there, and people were coming ³  to him ⁴  and being baptized.

Jacob’s well was there, so Jesus, since he was tired from the journey, sat right down beside ¹  the well. It was about noon. ² 

(Now it was the day of preparation ¹  for the Passover, about noon. ² ) ³  Pilate ⁴  said to the Jewish leaders, ⁵  “Look, here is your king!”

Now at the place where Jesus ¹  was crucified ²  there was a garden, ³  and in the garden ⁴  was a new tomb where no one had yet been buried. ⁵ 

Now in Joppa ¹  there was a disciple named Tabitha (which in translation means ²  Dorcas). ³  She was continually doing good deeds and acts of charity. ⁴ 

because he taught them like one who had authority, ¹  not like their experts in the law. ² 

A ¹  large herd of pigs was feeding some distance from them.
