“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” ¹ 

After ¹  making Peter and John ²  stand in their midst, they began to inquire, “By what power or by what name ³  did you do this?”

“Therefore stay alert, because you do not know on what day ¹  your Lord will come.

(Now he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die.) ¹ 

When the governor ¹  had read ²  the letter, ³  he asked ⁴  what province he was from. ⁵  When he learned ⁶  that he was from Cilicia, ⁷ 

But someone will say, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”

Then ¹  Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you ²  by whose authority ³  I do these things.”

(This happened ¹  to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated ²  what kind of death he was going to die. ³ )

Where, then, is boasting? ¹  It is excluded! By what principle? ²  Of works? No, but by the principle of faith!

“Which ones?” he asked. Jesus replied, “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,

So ¹  they answered Jesus, ²  “We don’t know.” ³  Then he said to them, “Neither will I tell you ⁴  by what authority ⁵  I am doing these things.

and said, “By what authority ¹  are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?”

Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me and I will tell you by what authority I do these things:

Now ¹  one of the experts in the law ²  came and heard them debating. When he saw that Jesus ³  answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”

“If ¹  you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners ²  love those who love them. ³ 

And ¹  if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ²  sinners ³  do the same.

And if you lend to those from whom you hope to be repaid, ¹  what credit is that to you? Even sinners ²  lend to sinners, so that they may be repaid in full. ³ 

Jesus said to them, ¹  “I have shown you many good deeds ²  from the Father. For which one of them are you going to stone me?”

(Now Jesus ¹  said this to indicate clearly by what kind of death Peter ²  was going to glorify God.) ³  After he said this, Jesus told Peter, ⁴  “Follow me.”

You ¹  do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? ²  For you are a puff of smoke ³  that appears for a short time and then vanishes.
